What Is a Specialist Orthodontist?

A specialist orthodontist is a qualified dentist who has completed an additional three years of postgraduate training solely in orthodontics — the field focused on diagnosing, preventing, and correcting misaligned teeth and jaws. This advanced training leads to a recognised qualification (such as an MSc in Orthodontics) and specialist registration with the General Dental Council (GDC).

Our own specialist, Dr Victoria Dixon (BDS FDS MSc M Orth RCS Eng), completed her dental degree in 1992 and pursued extensive postgraduate orthodontic training at Manchester University. With decades of experience in both hospital and private practice settings, Victoria brings advanced expertise to every case she treats.

What’s the Difference?

While general dentists are highly skilled and often offer orthodontic treatments like Invisalign or braces, they do not have the same depth of specialist training as an orthodontist.

Here’s why seeing a specialist orthodontist can make a difference:

  • Comprehensive assessment: Specialists can identify complex bite issues, jaw discrepancies, or growth patterns that may be missed during routine dental check-ups.
  • Tailored treatment planning: With in-depth knowledge, they design highly personalised treatment plans for the most effective and efficient results.
  • Expertise in complex cases: From severe crowding to jaw alignment concerns, specialists are equipped to manage even the most challenging cases.
  • Better long-term outcomes: Specialist-led care helps reduce the risk of treatment relapses, gum problems, or bite issues in the future.
