Why is my skin losing its glow?

Hyaluronic acid is an essential skin component. It acts like a sponge that retains water and keeps the skin moisturised, plumped and healthy. We lose 50 % of our hyaluronic acid between the age of 40 and 50. The skin becomes dry, thin and fragile; dark circles appear under the eyes; and lips become thinner.

In addition to normal ageing and loss of hyaluronic acid, our skin is exposed daily to various external factors that change its surface which results in the loss of brightness:

  • Sun exposure

  • Pollution

  • Junk food

  • Lack of sleep

  • Smoking

In order to help reduce the signs of ageing, hyaluronic acid gels can be injected within the skin, where it will act as a filler or a 'beauty booster'.

Why do wrinkles appear?

Static wrinkles

With time, our skin loses its volume and main components: collagen, elastin and especially hyaluronic acid. The dermis breaks down provoking the appearance of static wrinkles.

Dynamic wrinkles

The epidermis folds like a crumpled tissue each time we make any facial muscle movement. By repeating the same expression over and over again the skin eventually breaks down and dynamic wrinkles appear.

Why is my face losing volume?

With time, our skin progressively loses its structure due to:

  • Loss of hyaluronic acid and elasticity

  • Reduction of fat under the skin

  • Bone resorption

Consequently our facial skin sags under the effect of gravity and the face loses its volume; the oval line is less defined, the contour slackens, cheekbones flatten and tear troughs deform and widen.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a natural skin component. It acts like a sponge and retains large quantities of water to keep the skin plumped and soft. In the fillers syringes, hyaluronic acid comes in the form of a gel.

Teosyal vs. Juvéderm?

Teosyal® and Juvéderm are both brand names that produce injectable hyaluronic acid dermal fillers. At the Orchard Dental Practice we use Teoxane which is produced by Teosyal® which is made of non-animal origin and biodegradable hyaluronic acid.

What is the difference between Teoxane and Botox?

Teoxane and botulinum toxin (such as brands like Botox) are both used to treat wrinkles and are injected into the skin using needles. However, their mode of action is completely different. Botulinum toxin reduces muscle activity that causes lines and wrinkles, whereas hyaluronic acid dermal fillers restore the volume to your face that has been lost due to the ageing process.

Teoxane filler before & after

Before

Your pre-treatment consultation with the practitioner is very important. Take your time and discuss:

  • Your needs and expectations

  • Treatment options and related products

  • Your medical history

During

Our practitioner uses a pre-filled sterile filler syringe and a fine needle (or a cannula). The depth of the injection depends on the type of hyaluronic acid gel and the desired results. Superficial injections efficiently hydrate the skin and revive its glow. Deeper injections fill wrinkles and create volume. Teoxane PureSense has integrated anaesthetic (lidocaine) to ensure your comfort during the injection sessions. After injecting the hyaluronic acid, our practitioner gently massages the injected area to mold the product. The injection session lasts around 20 minutes.

After

The results can usually be seen immediately. The hyaluronic acid diffuses through your skin. On the surface, it increases the skin's hydration, softness and suppleness. On a deeper level, it fills the gaps between cells, smoothes the wrinkles and recreates lost volumes. Depending on your skin type, you may experience some temporary bruising and/or swelling that are confined to the treated area. Several months after the injection, hyaluronic acid naturally degrades and resorbs like any natural skin component.
